Service Description

FRIDAYS 7:00 - 8:30 PM / FEB. 27TH TO MAY 1ST Scratching Fundamentals Level: Beginner–Intermediate (prior DJ experience recommended) Duration: 10 weeks – 1 class/week – 90 minutes per class Total Instruction Time: 15 hours Capacity: 4 students Description This course is a focused introduction to the fundamentals of DJ scratching. Designed for students with basic DJing experience—or those currently enrolled in other MixAcademy DJ courses—it provides a structured and methodical approach to developing clean, controlled scratch technique. Students will learn how scratching works mechanically and rhythmically before progressing through essential foundational scratches. Emphasis is placed on correct hand positioning, vinyl control, crossfader technique, timing, and sound awareness. Rather than prioritizing speed or flash, the course focuses on precision, consistency, and musicality, ensuring students build habits that support long-term progression. Instruction is centered on vinyl-based technique, with principles that translate seamlessly to digital systems. By the end of the course, students will understand not just how to scratch, but why techniques work—giving them the tools to continue developing independently. Key Skills • Turntable and crossfader mechanics • Proper hand positioning and record control • Fader technique and coordination • Baby scratches, Stabs, Chirps, Transforms, and variations • Rhythmic placement and timing • Combining scratches with basic beats • Scratch phrasing and musical application • Doubling / Basic Beat Juggling Required Materials • A laptop capable of running the latest version of Serato DJ Pro (software is free for in-class use) Certification / Culminating Project Students will complete a short in-class skills assessment demonstrating foundational scratch techniques in time and with control in order to receive course certification. Successful completion qualifies students to advance to higher-level scratch or performance-focused courses. Students will also perform a short (approximately 3 minute) routine in a live setting at an end of term "graduation" party.
